Description

The morning of April 27th, 2023 I happened to be walking outside while visiting family in Colorado Springs, CO. I brought my portable astrophotography gear and was getting ready to setup for imaging when I noticed a bright light in the sky. I immediately pulled out my smartphone and took 40 seconds of video. I then heard a succession of rapid, deep, distant-sounding booms. I later learned what I filmed was part of a SpaceX mission disintegrating in an uncontrolled re-entry at approximately 08:53 UTC. This image shows the breakup over 30 seconds. The full video is available at: "NASA SpaceX Crew-5 Dragon trunk disintegrates in uncontrolled re-entry on April 27 at 08:53 UTC".
